Dogtown Downtown
To all the dog lovers out there, if you have yet to attend Dogtown Downtown, you may indeed be missing out. The 5th Annual Dogtown Downtown will be held on Saturday, May 19th, 2018, from 10 a.m.-noon. Beginning at the Lafayette Library and Learning Center, the “doggie parade” will march down Golden Gate Way to Lafayette Plaza Park where you’ll find contests, booths, and demonstrations. “Don’t have a furry friend? No problem—onsite adoptions take place throughout the event,” said Event Director Sara Regan. “Bring your whole family, including your dog, to this free event. Enter the contests and win some great prizes!” They feature a Wag-O-Meter, demonstrations by the Sheriff’s department, and they’re considering a yoga class for dogs and their human friends. Suffice it to say: it’s doggone fun. “Everyone is welcome,” added Jay Lifson, Executive Director of the Lafayette Chamber. “Lafayette loves its dogs, and humans get to attend too!”

Mid-City Nursery
They were founded in 1954 by John J. “Mickey” and Wilma “Dollie” Mikolajcik in American Canyon. Mickey is known officially as the “Father of American Canyon” because of his tireless service and commitment in helping make American Canyon into a city. Currently, John Mikolajcik, Mickey and Dollie’s son, and John’s son, Jake, currently own the nursery.
Service and plant quality has always been the main focus as well as maintaining a wide variety of plant material. The nursery provides a wide variety of fruit trees, roses, shade trees, perennials, shrubs, conifers, water plants, house plants, cacti, succulents, annuals, vegetables, and many other unusual and exciting plants. In addition, they try to make available to their customers the newest releases of plant material available on the market.

Mozart, Einstein & Me
There are many stores that don’t make any money. This store makes money BUT all their profits get donated to local music programs, and music lessons for children in need. “You’re not going to find a store like this anywhere, with people working for free,” Owner Stan Houston said. “I’ve never taken home a dime in 10 years.” They want to help local kids exceed at music, science, and art, therefore they sell instruments, art, board games, science kits, and music lessons. For the 10 years, that Stan has owned it they have donated all the profits to the school district band programs or scholarships. If your son needs a trumpet, and he can’t afford a trumpet, they give it to him. They want to make sure that any extra money goes to the community.

Farmyard Darlings
Now in their 8th year of business in Contra Costa County, Farmyard Darlings founders Kim Berry and Carole Sinclair are honored to be a part of the Local’s Choice Awards. Both Lafayette residents, they’ve been making country chic for their local community via their shop offering custom furniture made from reclaimed wood, such as barn doors, tables, bars, and benches. With a customer base ranging from Santa Cruz to Sacramento, they’ll be adding 20 products this year that recall the nostalgic days of simpler times. Their one-of-a-kind objects are sleuthed out from their many picking journeys, and they’ll also have their own private-label products curated by Farmyard Darlings. This small team of two looks at this venture as more of a lifestyle than a business. Their plan was pretty simple: “Surround yourself with things that you love.” Come on by and say hello.
